MEMPROW’s approach is premised on a feminist human rights perspective that gender inequalities, sexual and gender based violence are direct consequences of the patriarchal mind-sets and institutions that legitimize the subordination and dis-empowerment of women. Patriarchy is therefore the structural underlying cause that must be addressed if gender relations are to be transformed and girls and young women are able to enjoy their rights fully and live in dignity.
Although, MEMPROW is working and will continue to work at multiple levels; namely societal-cultural, community, institutional and individual in order to address the underlying factors that foster violence against women, derogate and diminish their status. Our main focus is on girls and young women in institutions of learning MEMPROW’s approach focuses on transforming mind shifts and empowering girls.
We believe that if we tackle the discriminatory perceptions, attitudes and practices that underpin and condone violence against women; and if we equip young women and girls with the tools, skills and knowledge to challenge patriarchal structures; we will create an environment in which girls’ can exercise their agency to challenge the status quo, resist abuse, and discrimination.
