MEMPROW trained 80 new child mothers in Nebbi and Nyaravur sub counties on the project titled ‘Ending child marriages, Teenage pregnancies and early unions.’ This training of 13-17 year old child mothers took 5-days from 21st to 25th September 2020.
It involved sessions on personal empowerment, social survival skills, entrepreneurship, human rights and violence, Sexual Reproductive Health Rights (SRHR), and Group dynamics; while on the side counselling was done for the girls who had shared their traumatic experiences. By the end of this week long engagement, the girls were more confident; they formed groups for activism and peer learning, and identified community influencers who would later be trained to contribute to their moral and emotional support.
“I know I should not be married until a time when I am ready and girls should not be married before they are 18 years. If I see that happen or about to happen, I and my group members should report to the Local Council Leaders and the police”, Faith a 16 year old participant.
“I know I can make a difference! My experience of violence should not stop me. I am going to start a small business of selling silverfish with some of the money I received as transport refund” Giramia, 17 year old trainee
